Now he pulled one out himself.
Mary placed the water in front of me.
“Thank you,” I said.
Mary lowered her voice. “There isn’t a $30 rule.”
Christopher heard her.
“There isn’t a $30 rule.”
“Mary.”
She looked at him. “There isn’t.”
That settled something inside me.
He hadn’t enforced a policy.
He’d invented one for me.
Christopher disappeared behind the counter and returned with coffee, a sandwich, and a bowl of water.
That settled something inside me.
“For your dog.”
Then he pushed the sandwich toward me.
“It’s on the house.”
“I didn’t order it.”
“I’d like to make this right.”
I looked at Steven.
“For your dog.”
Then back at Christopher.
“Would you be making it right if he hadn’t walked in?”
Christopher’s jaw tightened.
Steven said nothing.
Finally, Christopher said, “I shouldn’t have spoken that way.”
“No.”
