A Cafe Owner Kicked Me and My Old Chihuahua Out of His ‘Pet-Friendly’ Cafe Because I Only Ordered Coffee – Then One Stranger Walked in and Asked Him a Question That Made Him Go Pale

    Christopher’s jaw tightened.

He frowned.

    “You shouldn’t have meant it.”

“I’m under pressure. People sit for hours over one drink. Dogs take up space. I’ve got rent, payroll, food costs.”

“I know what things cost.”

He looked at me.

“Most of my Social Security check is gone before groceries. But I’d been here two minutes.”

    “I know what things cost.”

He didn’t say anything.

“You didn’t ask how long I planned to stay. You looked at me, looked at Benny, and decided we weren’t worth the space.”

    Christopher exhaled.

“Can we put this behind us?” Christopher asked.

“I don’t think I can.”

    “You didn’t ask.”

He frowned. “Ma’am, I apologized.”

“You apologized after you learned who he was.”

“We don’t need to turn one bad interaction into something bigger.”

I pushed the sandwich away. “You changed the rules because you didn’t like the customer standing in front of you. That’s already bigger than a bad interaction.”
