“What?”
“I’m Steven.”
Christopher’s mouth opened.
“Victoria’s father?”
Steven nodded.
“Sir, there’s been a misunderstanding.”
Steven’s expression barely changed.
“I’ve been standing right here.”
“Sir, there’s been a misunderstanding.”
“You came in at the end of the conversation…”
“I heard enough.”
Christopher rubbed his palm over his mouth.
“I didn’t realize who you were.”
Steven became very still.
“I came for coffee,” he said. “And to see the man my daughter plans to marry.”
“I didn’t realize who you were.”
There it was.
Victoria was Christopher’s fiancée.
Christopher looked at me again.
This time, everything about him changed.
“Please sit down, ma’am. Mary will bring your coffee, and you can have something to eat to help with the dizziness.”
I almost laughed.
Victoria was Christopher’s fiancée.
Ten seconds earlier, I wasn’t worth a chair.
