For the first time in my life, my fearless younger sister looked afraid.
“Daniel and I didn’t stop speaking because of a business argument,” she said.
I waited.
She looked at the old photograph.
“In 1989, Daniel discovered that Victor’s father was buying farmland through false companies. He asked me to help him copy records from their office.”
“You knew Victor’s family?”
“I worked for them.”
My hands went numb.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because the night we took the records, the office burned.”
The words emerged slowly.
“A security guard was seriously injured. Daniel escaped. I escaped. But Victor believed we started the f/i/re.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Clara looked at me.
“Your former accountant.”
She pointed to the second man in the photograph.
“He destroyed the office to hide the records. Daniel and I witnessed it. We agreed to remain silent until we could prove everything.”
