“Where is he now?” Victor asked.

“In custody.”

“Then he will start talking.”

“Is that why you triggered the fire alarm?”

“I came for the ledger.”

“You tried to take it from me.”

“I tried to prevent you from making a foolish decision.”

Priya held up another note.

Ask for meeting.

“What decision should I make?” I asked.

“Bring the red ledger to the old Northbridge packing plant tonight.”

“No.”

“Then everything your husband built will be erased.”

“The farm no longer belongs to me.”

“I am not talking about the farm.”

My skin went cold.

“What are you talking about?”

Victor lowered his voice.

“Ask Clara what happened in 1989.”

I turned toward my sister.

She looked as though he had struck her.

Victor ended the call.

Every eye in the room moved to Clara.

She took one step backward.

“Clara,” I said. “What happened in 1989?”

She sat in the wooden chair.
