I boarded my husband’s private jet and his secretary was in my seat, feeding him peeled orange. His mother told me to be considerate. I stepped off. Then the crew asked whether I wanted the flight cancelled.

She was twenty-nine and somebody considerably older built the position she was standing in. The entity is somebody else’s problem now and will be for some time.

And the flight attendant.

She is the only person in this entire account who did one thing right at the moment it was available, at no benefit to herself, with something to lose.

Her name is Marit. She has worked for my family’s company for eleven years and she has two children.

I asked her, in the September, over a coffee I arranged badly and she was gracious about, why she came down that cabin that day.

She said: because you were the only person on that aircraft who didn’t know whose plane it was.

Then she said it again differently, because I did not answer.

She said: ma’am, the crew have known for two years. We’ve all known. We just assumed you’d decided not to say.

That is not what she meant the first time and we both knew it.

What she meant is: I have watched that man speak to you on this aircraft for two years, and this morning somebody else did it, and I had a procedure available and I used it.

I let her have the kinder version because she will have to keep flying that route.

Here is the only thing I have.

Everybody wants this to be about a woman who stepped off a jet and discovered she owned it.

I did own it.

That emblem was on that uniform for two years. I had looked at it about forty times, on about forty flights, on three different crew members.

It is not a secret and it was never hidden. It was simply never said, by me, in a cabin, to anybody.

But a twenty-nine-year-old employee took hold of my wrist in front of eleven senior people and told me to go and sit behind the galley — and not one person in that cabin thought she was out of line.

They were not being cruel. I want to be very clear about that because it is the whole point.
