Hope suddenly felt terrifying.
But one sentence from the doctor stayed in my mind.
“This may be your only chance to experience pregnancy.”
So I said yes.
What followed was one of the hardest periods of my life.
There were tests.
Scans.
Blood work.
Psychological evaluations.
Long conversations about the risks.
Then one morning, the hospital called.
A suitable donor had been found.
I asked who she was.
The coordinator gently told me that the donor’s identity would remain private.
All I knew was that she was a young woman whose family had agreed to organ donation after her death.
I cried when I heard that.
Somewhere, a family was experiencing one of the worst days of their lives.
And because of their decision, I was being given the possibility of a future I had stopped believing in.
The transplant surgery lasted for hours.
When I woke up, the first thing I asked was whether it had worked.
