“Why has this been changed?” I asked.
The doctor immediately reached toward the baby’s wrist.
But before he could touch her, Daniel burst into the room.
“Don’t touch that baby!”
Two police officers followed him.
The doctor’s face went pale.
“What’s the meaning of this?”
Daniel held up his phone.
“When Lily was born, a nurse showed me her identification card. I took a picture because I was so happy.”
He turned the screen toward the officers.
“The number on that card doesn’t match the number on this baby’s bracelet.”
The doctor tried to explain that administrative mistakes happened.
Then a young nurse standing near the doorway suddenly began crying.
“I can’t do this anymore,” she whispered.
Everyone turned toward her.
“They’re going to take the real baby tonight.”
My entire body went cold.
“What real baby?” I screamed.
The nurse covered her mouth.
