When Tasha stepped forward and tried to shove Maya again, she expected exactly the same reaction she had seen all week: lowered eyes, silence, and retreat.
Instead, Maya moved.
It happened so quickly that several inmates later admitted they barely understood what they had seen. Maya caught Tasha’s wrist, shifted one step to the side, and redirected her momentum just enough to force the much heavier woman to stumble forward.
Tasha barely managed to stay on her feet.
The laughter disappeared immediately.
For several seconds, she simply stared at Maya as if she couldn’t understand how someone so thin and frail-looking had moved her at all.
