Maya wiped the water from her eyes.
Tasha leaned closer.
“What happened? You gonna cry?”
Maya didn’t answer immediately.
Her wet hair clung to her face as she stared at the ground.
Then she quietly said:
“I’m asking you one last time. Leave me alone.”
Tasha laughed again.
“Oh, listen to her.”
She reached forward and shoved Maya in the shoulder.
Because Maya was so light, she stumbled backward and hit the wall.
A few inmates gasped.
Tasha stepped toward her again, clearly enjoying herself.
“And what are you going to do if I don’t?”
Maya remained against the wall for several seconds.
Her head was lowered.
Her hands were completely still.
Tasha looked over at her friends and laughed again.
But when she turned back—
Maya’s expression had changed.
The frightened, exhausted look was gone.
Her jaw tightened.
Her eyes slowly lifted.
And then, without warning, Maya snapped her head toward Tasha and stared directly into her eyes with a look so cold that even Tasha’s smile began to disappear.
