My Partner Refused To Marry Me So I Made Him Regret It – The Archivist

A few months later, Elaine asked me to meet her for lunch. We had stayed in touch, carefully, tentatively, texting now and then, because she had been my family too for ten years and neither of us wanted to lose that entirely just because her son had turned out to be who he was. It was a strange grief of its own, losing a family you had married into without ever having married in, and Elaine felt it too, I think, from the other side. We met at a little place with a patio, under a striped awning, and we talked for a while about small safe things, her garden, a cousin’s new baby, the weather, both of us circling whatever it was she had brought me there to say. Then, when the plates had been cleared, she reached into her bag and set a box on the table between us and slid it across to me. It was the velvet box this time, the real one, the heirloom box, and I knew before she opened it what was inside.

I stared at it. Elaine, I said.

David returned it to me for good, she said. It’s mine again, to do with as I choose. And I spoke to my sister, and to the rest of the family, before I called you. I told them what I wanted to do. They all agree with me.

She opened the box, and there was his grandmother’s diamond, the same one that had sat in a drawer for three years while I carried a lie I didn’t know I was carrying.

I can’t take that, I said.

Yes, you can, she said.

It should stay in your family, I said. It’s a family ring. It’s his grandmother’s.

Her expression softened, and she reached across the table and put her hand over mine, the way she had at Christmas, two years and a whole lifetime ago. Sarah, she said. You were my family for ten years. Every holiday, every birthday, every ordinary Sunday. You are more my family than the story my son told me about you. This ring was supposed to become part of a marriage, and instead it became part of a lie, and I am done letting it belong to that story. And if David ever marries someone else someday, then he can go and choose a ring with his own two hands and his own honesty, and this one has nothing to do with it.
