Brianna stopped smiling.
Vincent’s lawyer sat forward.
“You told everyone I fell at home,” I said calmly.
“You told the insurance company I was never on payroll.
You told the hospital I was your wife helping out for fun.”
Vincent’s face hardened.
“That has nothing to do with marital assets.”
“No,” I said.
“It has everything to do with fraud.”
Cordelia rose beside me and placed a thick blue folder on the table.
Vincent looked at it for the first time.
And for the first time in twenty years, I watched fear enter his eyes.
Because the first page in that folder was not the hospital record.
It was a deed.
And the name on it was my mother’s.
PART 2
I want to explain the folder in order, because Cordelia built it in order, over eleven months, and because my mother — who is the reason it exists — did everything in order and would have wanted it told that way.
