“And the menu.”
Rosalie stepped forward and put the basket on the table.
Inside was a school notebook, water-stained, forty years old, in my mother’s handwriting.
And beside it, the first Costa’s menu — 2006, on a legal pad, in mine.
“Mr. Halvorsen.
You wrote that he’d traveled.
He went to one country.
It was for a wedding.
Every recipe on that menu is in this notebook, in my mother’s hand, and every one of them is in my hand on the pad next to it, from her kitchen table, because Vincent said ‘just get something down, I’ll fix it.'”
“He never fixed it.
It never needed fixing.
That’s the whole restaurant.”
Halvorsen picked up the notebook.
He read for a long moment.
Then he said, quietly, to no one, “The gnocchi’s on page four.”
“Page four,” Rosalie said.
“Her mother’s.
1961.”
And then it happened — not from me.
From Carmela.
Vincent’s mother.
