My Granddaughter Gave Back a Diamond Ring She Found at the Store, but We Never Expected Someone to Show Up at Our House

His voice shook.

“So I got up,” he said. “I don’t know how. My arm was burned so bad I couldn’t feel it. But I got up and I walked over to the car. And I sat down next to her. And I held her hand.”

He was crying now. Not hiding it.

“And she stopped screaming,” he said. “She looked at me. And she held up her bunny. And she said, ‘This is Mr. Hops. He’s scared too.’ And I said, ‘It’s okay, Mr. Hops. I’ve got you.’”

I put my hand over my mouth.

“And then she started singing,” Danny said. “To the bunny. ‘You Are My Sunshine.’ Over and over. She sang it to Mr. Hops until the ambulance came to take her. And I held her hand the whole time.”

I couldn’t breathe.

You Are My Sunshine.

That’s what Lisa sang to Ellie every night. Every single night. From the day she was born. I sing it to her now. Every night.
