“What is it?”
“Please. Just let me show you.”
“I don’t open my door to strangers at seven in the morning.”
“I understand. I’m sorry for the hour.” He took a breath. “Ma’am, we’ve been looking for you for years.”
I stood there with my hand on the doorknob.
Looking for me for years.
For a crazy second, I thought it was about Hank. Some debt he’d left. Some mistake. Then I thought it was about the house. The bank. The back taxes I was eight months behind on.
Then I thought about Lisa.
I don’t know why. Something about the way he said years. Something in his voice.
“What do you mean?” I said. “Who’s been looking?”
“May I come in?”
“No.”
He nodded. Like he understood that. He held up the envelope so I could see it through the gap in the curtain.
