Just lonely.
Just human.
Henry continued.
“This morning, I almost turned around three times before entering this pool.”
I smiled sadly.
“So did I.”
“I know.”
He laughed.
“That’s why I spoke to you. You looked exactly how I felt—terrified but determined not to show it.”
A few people around us laughed softly.
Even I did.
Then Henry looked toward Melissa.
“And then I watched somebody try to make you feel ashamed for being alive.”
Melissa’s face tightened.
“I was joking.”
“No,” he said calmly. “You were humiliating her.”
The words weren’t loud.
They didn’t need to be.
Melissa looked away.
Henry turned back to me.
“When you walked into that pool wearing exactly what you wanted, despite being nervous, I thought you were brave.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Nobody had ever called me brave for something so simple.
“Then you spent the afternoon talking to a stranger who needed kindness more than you knew.”
