“You still don’t understand what your husband discovered.”
“Then explain it.”
Judge Reeves looked toward the door.
“Do not answer her.”
Victor ignored him.
“Your husband found a system that existed long before any of us entered it. Counties need development. Developers need land. Farmers become emotional about property that has no efficient future.”
“Efficient for whom?”
“For everyone willing to accept reality.”
“You ruined families.”
“We moved resources.”
“You forced people from their homes.”
“They were compensated.”
Harold laughed bitterly.
“Some of them were.”
Victor turned on him.
“Be quiet.”
The tension among the three men was obvious.
They had worked together for years, but trust had vanished.
Each man knew the others possessed enough information to destroy him.
I looked at Harold.
“Daniel trusted you.”
Harold’s jaw tightened.
“He never trusted anyone.”
“He invited you into our home.”
“He investigated every decision I made.”
“Because you were stealing.”
