At the time, I mistook his questions for concern.
Now I understood.
“How long had they known each other?”
“We found messages going back eighteen months.”
My stomach tightened.
Marcus had not simply discovered the farm sale.
He had been working with Victor.
“What about Rachel?”
“We’re still determining her involvement,” Priya said. “Most messages were between Victor and Marcus. Rachel may have known only part of the plan.”
Clara’s voice hardened.
“She helped forge the document.”
“Yes.”
“She watched Marcus hurt Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
“Then do not soften what she did.”
“I’m not,” Priya replied. “I’m separating facts.”
There was a knock at the door.
One of the officers checked the hallway before opening it.
Luis stood outside.
He carried a small suitcase and an old wooden box.
“I brought some things from the farm,” he said. “Clothes, medicine, and this.”
He placed the box in my lap.
