Marcus pulled against the officer’s grip.

“She provoked us!”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“No,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was barely audible.

“She didn’t.”

Marcus stared at his sister.

Rachel’s face crumpled.

“We came here for the money,” she continued. “We forged the document. We threatened her. You hit her.”

“You were part of it!”

“I know.”

“You think confessing will save you?”

“No.”

“Then shut up!”

Rachel looked at me.

For one brief second, I saw the little girl who used to run toward me after nightmares.

Then the officer guided her back to the car.

Before she climbed inside, she said, “I’m sorry.”

I wanted those words to repair something.

They did not.

Not yet.

Marcus was placed in the second car.

As it pulled away, he twisted around to glare at me through the rear window.

I thought that was the end of the morning.
