Marcus continued staring at Luis.

“So what happens now?”

“The cooperative takes possession next month,” Luis said. “The land remains agricultural. The workers become owners. Evelyn retains lifetime use of the cottage beside the west orchard.”

Marcus looked at me.

“You still get to live there?”

“Yes.”

“And they pay you?”

“No.”

He appeared almost offended by my answer.

“You sold a three-million-dollar farm, gave away the proceeds, and arranged to live in a cottage for free?”

“It is not free. I contributed my share.”

“This is insane.”

“No,” Samuel said. “It is carefully planned.”

Marcus turned toward the officer.

“My mother is mentally incompetent. I demand an evaluation.”

Samuel opened another section of the folder.

“Completed six weeks ago by two independent physicians.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You planned all of this.”

I looked at my son.

“Yes.”

That was the moment he finally understood.

The camera had not been an accident.
