“I survived you.”

He pointed the g/u/n toward the window.

Rachel made a choking sound.

“Marcus, no!”

I did not move.

“Put it down,” I told him.

“Shut up.”

“You wanted the money. This is no longer about money.”

“It is always about money!”

“No. Now it is about whether you make one terrible morning even worse.”

Outside, the order came again.

Marcus began pacing.

His breathing became quick and uneven.

Rachel pressed herself against the wall, keeping as much distance from him as the kitchen allowed.

“I didn’t agree to this,” she said.

Marcus spun toward her.

“You agreed to all of it.”

“Not the g/u/n.”

“You forged her signature.”

“You told me the document was only leverage!”

“You took her phone.”

“Because you told me to!”

“You demanded the money before I ever arrived.”

Rachel’s eyes flashed.

“You said we deserved it!”
