“Some of them.”
Marcus looked from Daniel to Rachel.
“Which of you is lying?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Both of us, probably.”
The room had changed again.
Marcus still held the g/u/n, but he no longer controlled anything.
Daniel walked to the kitchen table and examined the forged document.
“You printed the wrong version,” he said.
Rachel stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
“The date is incorrect. The account numbers are outdated. And this paragraph gives Marcus joint authority.”
Marcus looked down at the page.
Rachel’s voice sharpened. “You prepared it.”
“I prepared several copies.”
“You said this was the final one.”
“I said it was the one you should bring.”
Rachel understood before Marcus did.
“You wanted it to fail.”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“I wanted to see how far you would go.”
“For what?”
“To prove that Eleanor was right about you.”
My name seemed to strike the room like a bell.
