Trudy lowered her eyes.
“I thought you had already been through enough. I was wrong to make that decision for you.”
She handed me the envelope and walked away.
That evening, after Lucas went to bed, I finally opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Teagan standing beside a teenage boy I vaguely remembered seeing around our home.
There was also a letter.
“Mom,
I know you’ve been asking about the baby’s father. I haven’t told you everything because I’m scared.
He knows about Lucas.
He wanted to stay, but he’s afraid of disappointing his family and changing the plans he had for his life. I told him that if he ever comes back, I need it to be because he chooses us for himself.
You keep asking who he is.
I wish you would ask me why I’m afraid.”
I stopped reading.
A memory suddenly returned.
