I Noticed a Fresh Ring Mark on My Husband’s Finger After His Fishing Trip, Then His Explanation Made Everything Worse

He took out the small one first.

“This one’s yours,” he said. “If you want it. It matches mine. Read the inside.”

He handed it to me. I tilted it toward the light.

Engraved inside the band, in tiny letters, were the words:

Even if I forget — I chose you.

I couldn’t speak. I just nodded.

He slipped it onto my finger, next to my old wedding band. It fit perfectly.

Then he held up the wide ring. The one with the hinge.

“Mine says the same thing,” he said. “Only backwards. Even if I forget — she chose me.” He looked at me. “So that when I look at it, someday, and I don’t know why I’m wearing it… maybe I’ll read the inside, and I’ll know somebody loved me enough to stay.”

He held it out to me.

“Will you put it on me, Lee?”
