I Noticed a Fresh Ring Mark on My Husband’s Finger After His Fishing Trip, Then His Explanation Made Everything Worse

“Me neither.”

We walked down the aisle together between the chairs, between the daisies, toward the water and the man waiting at the end of it.

When we got there, Sophie took my hand and put it in her father’s. She kissed his cheek. She kissed mine. Then she went and sat down in the front row next to Ray and immediately took the phone out of his hand.

Mark held both my hands. His were cold and shaking.

“Hi, Lee,” he said.

“Hi.”

“You look…” He shook his head. He couldn’t finish.

“I know,” I said. “Sophie picked it.”

“Remind me to thank her.”

“I will,” I said. “I’ll remind you.”

He smiled. I could see he understood exactly what I meant.

Pastor Jim said a few words. I don’t remember most of them. I was looking at Mark the whole time.

Then he said, “Mark has written his own vows. Mark?”
