“My mother could have left me at the hospital.”
My breath caught.
I had never told him the entire story of what had happened after he was born.
But years earlier, he had found the old paperwork.
“The doctors couldn’t tell anyone how long I would live. My dad was scared. My mom was scared too. The difference was that my mom took me home with her fear.”
The room was so quiet that I could hear the woman beside me crying.
Jake smiled.
“I don’t know how many years I have. But I know life isn’t about the number of years you get. It’s about how many people you help feel a little less alone during those years.”
People began standing.
First a few.
Then the entire auditorium.
The applause wouldn’t stop.
I looked at my son and remembered that morning in the hospital.
