Before My Son Passed Away, :A:He Donated His Heart to an 18-Year-Old Girl – Then Her Mother Gave Me His Final Letter: “Mom, There’s Something You Need to Know About Her”

“I promised Bryce that I wouldn’t.”

That answer followed me home.

I sat at my kitchen table that night with the envelope in front of me for almost an hour before I finally unfolded the pages again.

The next few lines changed everything.

Bryce wrote that Colleen’s daughter was named Sadie.

Then he wrote that Sadie was Trevor’s biological daughter.

I read the sentence once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

My husband had been dead for four years, and somehow he had managed to break my heart all over again.

According to Bryce, he had discovered the truth before Trevor died. Trevor had been sending money to Colleen for years, and Bryce had found records of the payments.

Behind the letter were copies of several bank statements.

I spread them across the table.

Three hundred dollars.

Five hundred.

Eight hundred.

Later, the transfers became larger and more frequent.

Some went back nearly eighteen years.

I remembered those years.

Trevor telling me we needed to watch our spending.

Trevor saying we should postpone repairing the roof.

Trevor telling Bryce that a summer program he wanted was simply too expensive.

All that time, money had been going to another woman.

I picked up the framed photograph of Trevor that had been sitting on the shelf beside me.

“You had another daughter?”

I wanted him to answer.

Instead, he kept smiling at me from a photograph taken on a family vacation, back when I had believed the three of us knew everything important about one another.

The next morning, I went through every transfer again.

Then I pulled out Trevor’s old files.

Tax returns. Insurance papers. Business documents. Receipts.

Colleen’s name appeared nowhere.

Sadie’s did.

I found it in Trevor’s will.

Six months before his death, Trevor had quietly changed the document and created a small trust for a girl named Sadie.

At the time, I had asked his mother about the unfamiliar name.

She told me Sadie was a distant relative.

Four years later, I called her again.

“Who is Sadie?”

There was a long silence.
