In March 2015, this boy from Wichita, Kansas, was diagnosed with anaplastic astrocytoma, an aggressive and rare brain tumor.
The surgeries left him bald and with a huge, horseshoe-shaped scar above his right ear.
One day he confessed to his father, Josh Marshall, that he felt “like a monster” whenever someone looked at him.
Josh didn’t give him a speech. He went to a tattoo studio, Point Black Tattoo, and asked Merl Kent to draw the same scar as his son’s, line by line, on the skin of his own head.
He told Gabriel that if people wanted to look at him strangely, now they would have to look at both of them. In 2016, that photo won the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s #BestBaldDad contest, with more than 5.000 votes.
Today Gabriel says that he and his dad are like twins.
