I folded the note carefully and placed it inside the lining of my own coat, hanging on the back of the bedroom door.
Then I heard it.
Low voices downstairs.
Daniel’s, and then Ava’s.
I moved to the top of the stairs without turning on the light.
“—just checking in,” Daniel was saying.
His voice was light.
Casual.
The voice he used when he was not being casual at all.
“I’m fine,” Ava said.
“Just tired.”
“You seemed upset earlier.”
“Anniversary.
I told you.”
A pause.
“You know you can always talk to me,” Daniel said.
“About anything.”
I pressed my back against the wall.
“I know,” Ava said.
“Good.” Another pause.
“Sleep well.”
His footsteps moved toward the kitchen.
The tap ran briefly.
Then silence.
I went back to the bedroom and sat in the dark for a long time.
He was testing her.
He already knew something had shifted.
And tomorrow, or the day after, or the day after that, he was going to push harder.
We did not have as much time as I had thought.
