Document three. Revocation of her authority.
She held my health and welfare power of attorney and she was the person the hospital would have gone to.
I revoked it and appointed Meriel Dane.
Which meant that at twenty past four on the morning of the eleventh of January, when I died, my wife had no legal ability to authorise anything at all, including a cremation.
And document four. The will.
Which leaves the bulk of everything to a twenty-five-year-old hospital orderly I had known for nine days.
And I want to set out exactly why, because it was not sentiment.
A woman who quietly inherits eighty-two million dollars says nothing to anybody, ever.
A woman who has been cut out of eighty-two million dollars goes to a solicitor within a fortnight.
She makes a claim. She files a statement of case. She gives instructions, and disclosure, and eventually evidence, and every single word of it is on a court file with her name at the bottom.
I gave my wife something to fight over so that she would spend the next year explaining herself in writing.
She did it. She filed in the February.
What happened after the eleventh of January.
The post-mortem went ahead because it had to. The toxicology was not ambiguous.
Bettina Calder was arrested in the March.
She has been charged. She is awaiting trial and I am not going to write another word about that part because it has not happened yet and it is not mine to characterise.
Rhodes Perrin was interviewed twice and has not been charged.
His account is that he knew nothing, and there is not, as far as I understand it, anything that contradicts it.
Which is infuriating and which may well be true, and both of those can sit in the same sentence.
And now the part I did not foresee, and which I would give a great deal to go back and prevent.
Deniz Aksoy was arrested on the nineteenth of January.
Eight days after I died.
And of course he was.
A twenty-five-year-old orderly is named sole beneficiary of eighty-two million dollars nine days after meeting the testator. He was in the room. He made the phone call. He had an overwhelming, documented, desperate need for two point four million dollars.
